History of Ukraine on Dipity.
Modern Ukraine has had a rather turbulent history. Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire until it fell in 1918, at which point Ukraine declared independence. Unfortunately, that declaration was unstable and short lived, when it was ceased yet again by Russia in 1921, only this time it was Soviet control. Ukraine would remain a member of the USSR until it successfully declared independence in 1991. During its time under Soviet control, Ukraine fell victim several horrifying acts of Stalin and Nazi Germany. In 1986, Ukraine suffered yet another terrible ordeal when a nuclear plant in Chernobyl exploded killing thousands and negatively affecting the health of millions. Since declaring its independence Ukraine has had many political brawls as the country is still torn between loyalty to Russia and wanting to become part of the European Union. The results of the past two presidential elections have been challenged by the losing candidate, the first of which spurred the Orange Revolution. The last two presidents have been accused of corruption, one even accused of being involved in the murder of journalist. Ukraine's independence is still quite new, it does not appear the political turbulence will subsist any time soon.
